From the moment he zeroed in on accounting, it’s been full steam ahead for Andrew Young.
That moment came as a sophomore at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York. Mr. Young started out interested in social work but quickly realized he wanted to go in a different direction.
“I was always kind of drawn to the number side of things, the financial side,” said Mr. Young, the Managing Shareholder at Renner and Company. “I thought accounting offered what I was looking for — that precision, that trust. I put a lot of stock into being a trusted advisor.”
Education and work history
Mr. Young graduated from Roberts Wesleyan with a bachelor of science in accounting, summa cum laude. He later earned a master of business administration with distinction from Liberty University.
He joined Renner and Company in 2009 after several years of public accounting experience with both Big Four and regional firms in New York. Mr. Young became the firm’s Managing Shareholder in October. His experience includes audits of trade associations, public charities, private foundations, labor unions, schools and other tax-exempt organizations, in addition to advisory services.
Mr. Young is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in the District of Columbia, Virginia and New York, and maintains a Chartered Global Management Accountant license. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Greater Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Goals and accomplishments
He has been an integral part of growing the audit practice at Renner. He became a partner in 2013 at the age of 31.
“Becoming a partner was a huge thing for me,” he said. “I always knew it was going to happen … or that was my goal. I just didn’t know it was going to happen at such a young age. I’m proud of the firm for giving me that opportunity.”
Currently, Mr. Young oversees many of Renner and Company’s audit engagements, including federal award recipients, as well as many of the firm’s Form 990 returns.
“(Being a shareholder) means setting the tone … you set the tone everyday,” Mr. Young said. “Your attitude and example is the temperature of the firm, basically.”
As recognition for his accomplishments at a young age, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce selected Mr. Young as a member of its 2021 Class of 40 Under 40. The program recognizes top individuals, less than 40 years of age, from Alexandria and the surrounding region in a variety of industries and from unique backgrounds.
Outside the office
Passionate about serving the nonprofit community in Alexandria, Mr. Young served on the board of directors for 10 years for Liberty’s Promise, Inc., a nonprofit organization in Alexandria that supports young immigrants while encouraging them to be active and conscientious American citizens. He was the Board Chairman from 2016-19, Finance Chair from 2011-16 and again in 2020.
Outside of his work, Mr. Young’s passion lies with his family. He is happily married to his wife, Seble, and they have two sons, Ethan, 9, and Ezra, 6, and a 3-year-old daughter, Elle.
Mr. Young and Seble partner with organizations in Ethiopia to help those in extreme poverty and getting them even the most basic of care, such as a doctor’s visit.
