Renner Firm News; February 9, 2023

Goodwin Living, a not-for-profit, faith-based, senior living and health care services organization in the National Capital Region, recently announced that Joan Renner has been elected Chair of the Goodwin Living Foundation Board of Directors.

Mrs. Renner, who is a senior consultant at Renner and Company, succeeds Gant Redmon in the position. Mr. Redmon, who is Managing Partner with Redmon, Peyton and Braswell, LLP, served as Chair of the Goodwin Living Foundation Board of Directors from 2005 to 2022.

The Goodwin Living Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that supports Goodwin Living residents, team members and their families. Thanks to generous support from donors, the Goodwin Living Foundation offers financial assistance programs for team members, as well as initiatives for educational and professional development.

“I respect and admire the caring team members at Goodwin Living who are on the front lines of excellence every day,” Mrs. Renner said. “I’m excited to support Goodwin Living Foundation’s programs that help health care professionals develop their careers.”

The Goodwin Living Foundation also provides financial assistance to residents of its three senior living communities through its Resident Support Fund.

As a daughter of Goodwin House residents, Mrs. Renner appreciates the Foundation’s programs that support, honor and uplift the lives of older adults.

“When my parents lived at Goodwin House, it became like my second home,” Mrs. Renner said. “I came to view their fellow residents and caregivers as members of my second family. I am so inspired by Goodwin Living’s innovative programming, such as music and art therapy, that enhances residents’ quality of life.”

Extending its reach more broadly and with thanks to generous donors, the Goodwin Living Foundation also makes it possible for all older adults across the U.S. to access the Goodwin Living’s breakthrough program, StrongerMemory, at no cost.

Mrs. Renner has been helping professionals develop their careers for more than 30 years. As a CPA firm Shareholder, she has encouraged, taught and trained young professionals, and has shared her expertise with hundreds of her fellow professionals, as well as with nonprofit leaders and community organizations, as a popular presenter at professional and industry conferences.

In 2014, the Alexandria Commission for Women recognized Mrs. Renner for Leadership in Business and Career Development. In 2021, the Virginia Society of CPAs honored Renner as their first-ever Established Leader Honoree in their Women to Watch awards.

A former Board Chair of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, Mrs. Renner also understands the significance of financial assistance for higher education to college students and their families. “While visiting my parents at Goodwin House, I was able to connect a Goodwin Living team member with the Scholarship Fund, so that she could secure financial assistance for her children to go to college,” she said. Today, the Goodwin Living Foundation provides tuition assistance to Goodwin Living team members and plans to extend this program to their families in the future.

“It’s easy to support the work of the Goodwin Living Foundation,” Mrs. Renner said. “When we build up those around us, we all benefit.”

Mrs. Renner brings a strong understanding of nonprofits to her work as Foundation Chair. Through her work as a shareholder with the CPA firm of Renner and Company over the past 30 years, she’s helped hundreds of nonprofits guide their organizations financially, with her expertise in providing services to nonprofits in the areas of accounting, auditing, consulting and nonprofit taxation.

She previously served on the Goodwin Living Foundation Board of Directors as Vice Chair and chaired the Governance Committee. Mrs. Renner is a past Chairman of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, past President of the Alexandria Rotary and active supporter of many local not-for-profit organizations.

“As a nonprofit, The Goodwin Living Foundation supports a caring community, embracing not only our residents, members and patients but also our caregivers and those in a wider sphere,” Mrs. Renner said. “I am excited to support the work of the Foundation, as we continue to build our capacity to make a difference and seek to serve the broader horizon that is our future.”
